Paid Social vs Paid Search: What's the Difference?

Paid search captures people who are already looking. Paid social introduces an offer to people who fit, but have not typed the query yet. Most acquisition plans need a clear reason to use each.

Intent is the real difference

On search, the person raises a hand. They type a product, a problem, or a provider. The ad has to match that language and send them to a page that continues it. Waste shows up as irrelevant queries.

On social, you interrupt a feed. The person did not ask for the ad. The creative has to earn the stop, and the audience settings have to keep the interruption relevant. Waste shows up as cheap clicks from people who will never buy.

What each channel is good at

Search is strongest when demand already exists and the business can fulfill it in a defined area or category. Social is strongest when you need to create consideration, explain a less obvious offer, or reach a role or interest that does not search in a tidy phrase.

Retargeting can live on both. Someone who visited from search and did not convert is a different audience from a cold social prospect. Mixing them into one campaign makes the report harder to trust.

  • Use paid search to capture existing demand
  • Use paid social to reach people who are not searching yet
  • Keep prospecting and retargeting in separate campaigns
  • Judge each channel on the leads or orders it was hired to produce

Creative and measurement are not interchangeable

Search creative is mostly language: headlines, descriptions, and the page. Social creative is the hook, the visual, and the first line. A winning search ad pasted into a feed usually looks like a classified listing.

Costs are not comparable in the raw. A lower cost per click on social is not a win if the qualified rate is worse. Read paid search and paid social on cost per qualified lead or cost per order, then decide the mix.
